An automatic transmission and a manual
gearbox accomplish exactly the same
thing, but they do it in totally
different ways. They differ in that the
manual gearbox locks and unlocks
different sets of gears to the output
shaft to achieve the various gear
ratios, whereas automatic gearboxes use
the same set of gears to produce all of
the different gear ratio's. Gear ratios
are what allow a car to reach a high
rate of speed or climb a steep hill.
Without a gearbox, cars would be limited
to one gear. The ratio would have to be
predetermined to allow the car to travel
at the desired top speed. The vehicle
would not last very long without a
gearbox, making it all the more
important that your vehicles gearbox, is
always maintained by a reputable company
that specialises in gearboxes.
